Private, one-on-one random chat
"Private" here means two things: your conversation is one-on-one (never broadcast or group), and it's end-to-end encrypted so only you and your match can read it — not the relay server, not us.
One stranger at a time
Press "Start listening" and you join a queue by yourself. As soon as one other person is also listening — and your filters, if any, are compatible — you're paired with exactly one stranger. There's no group chat, no public room, no spectators.
Private by encryption, not just by policy
Every match generates a fresh key pair in your browser (ECDH P-256 key exchange, AES-256-GCM message encryption). Your messages are encrypted before they leave your device and decrypted only on your partner's. The relay server that connects you two physically cannot read the plaintext — it only ever handles ciphertext. Details: how the encryption works.
Choosing who you're matched with
Matching is random by default, but two optional filters narrow it:
- Gender filter. Self-report a gender (or leave it unspecified) and choose who you want to be matched with — any, women, men, or non-binary. These are self-reported, not verified.
- Nearby matching. Switch from "Anywhere" to "Nearby" to be matched with someone within roughly 250 km, using your device's location (asked for only if you enable this) or, if you decline, an approximate country match instead.
What "private" doesn't mean
It doesn't mean verified, and it doesn't mean risk-free — your match is still an anonymous stranger. Reporting is instant and moderation is graduated and automatic; read our safety tips before your first chat. MURMURLINE is 18+ only.
Nothing kept unless you both want it
By default, the conversation and its key disappear the moment either of you hangs up, skips, or closes the tab. If you and your partner both press "Keep chat," it's saved end-to-end encrypted on both of your own devices — never on our server — until either of you ends it.
