Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about MURMURLINE — an anonymous, end-to-end encrypted alternative to Omegle for talking to strangers.

What is MURMURLINE?

MURMURLINE is a free, anonymous, one-on-one text chat with strangers. There's no sign-up — you pick an alias, press start, and get matched with one other person listening at the same time. Messages are end-to-end encrypted in your browser.

Is MURMURLINE an Omegle alternative?

Yes. MURMURLINE covers the same core idea Omegle did — instant, anonymous one-on-one chat with a random stranger, no account required — but is text-only and end-to-end encrypted, and was built after Omegle shut down.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There are no accounts, no email, no password, and no phone number. You just pick a display alias (randomly generated, or your own) and start chatting.

Are my messages actually encrypted?

Yes. Every conversation gets a fresh end-to-end encryption key generated in your browser (ECDH P-256 key exchange, AES-256-GCM message encryption). The server only ever relays ciphertext — it cannot read your messages.

Is anything saved or logged?

By default, no message content is ever stored, encrypted or otherwise. When you hang up, skip, or close the tab for good, the conversation and its encryption key are gone for good — there's no history to look back on, by you or anyone else. A refresh, a restored tab or a brief connection drop does not end a live chat: reopen the page within about 90 seconds and you are back in the same conversation. The one exception is a chat that you and your partner both agree to keep: it is then saved on both of your devices (and only there) until either of you ends it.

Can I keep a chat and come back to it later?

Yes, if you both agree. Press Keep chat, and if the other person accepts, the conversation is saved on both devices with its own end-to-end encryption key. It survives refreshes, closed tabs and days away, and you find it under Your chats on the home screen. Either of you can end it at any time, which deletes it from both devices. Kept chats that go 30 days without any activity are deleted. You can keep up to 50 chats, and to save space only the newest 40 images per chat stay on your device (older ones are replaced by a note; text is never trimmed). A kept chat only exists on the device where you made it — clear your browser's site data and it's gone.

What if I lose a kept chat?

A kept chat lives only on the device and browser where you made it. If you clear your browser data, switch browsers or devices, or your browser removes site storage after a long time away (Safari can do this after about a week), the chat is gone and it cannot be restored — its key only ever existed there, and we can't read messages. Your partner isn't told automatically: their new messages simply stay undelivered, and they can end the chat at any time. Kept chats with no activity for 30 days are deleted.

How does matching work?

Press "Start listening" and you join a queue. As soon as another person is listening (and your gender filters are compatible, if you set any), you're paired instantly, one stranger at a time.

Can I choose who I'm matched with?

You can optionally self-report a gender and filter for who you want to be matched with (any, women, men, or non-binary). These are self-reported and not verified.

Is it safe to talk to strangers on MURMURLINE?

We can't vouch for who you'll be matched with — it's a random stranger, same as any chat-roulette style service. We do run automatic and reportable moderation with graduated timeouts for abusive behavior, but you should still treat it like talking to anyone else you don't know: don't share identifying information you're not comfortable sharing.

What happens if someone is abusive?

Use the Report button, or just hang up and start a new chat. Repeated flags against a source put it in a temporary, time-limited cooldown — never a permanent, unappealable ban — and this moderation runs without the server ever reading your message content.

Is MURMURLINE free?

Yes, completely free, no premium tier, no paywalled features.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, MURMURLINE runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser with nothing to install. On Android there is also an app on Google Play: chats stay open when you leave it, and you get a notification when someone answers.

What data do you actually collect?

Very little, and none of it persists: your IP is used briefly for an approximate country flag and basic abuse rate-limiting, and your chosen alias/gender preference is used only to run the match. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
