An Omegle alternative, built after Omegle shut down
Omegle closed in November 2023. MURMURLINE keeps the part of it that actually mattered — instant, anonymous, one-on-one chat with a random stranger — and adds real end-to-end encryption, no video requirement, and a graduated moderation system that doesn't need to read your messages to work.
What MURMURLINE keeps from Omegle
- Instant matching with a random stranger — press one button, no waiting room profile to fill out.
- No account, no email, no phone number. You pick a display alias and go.
- One stranger at a time, text-first — the same "who's out there right now" feeling.
- Skip/hang up any time and get matched again immediately.
What's different
- Browser-side end-to-end encryption. Every chat gets a fresh key pair generated in your browser (ECDH P-256 + AES-256-GCM). Our relay server passes ciphertext between you and your partner — it cannot read the conversation. See how the encryption works.
- Text-only, by design. No camera, no video roulette. That removes an entire category of the abuse Omegle became known for.
- Nothing is stored by default. When you hang up, skip, or close the tab, the chat and its key are gone. The only exception: if you and your partner both explicitly choose to "Keep chat," it's saved end-to-end encrypted on both of your devices, never on our server.
- Reportable, graduated moderation. A report or an auto-detected violation puts a connection into a temporary, time-limited cooldown (5 minutes, then 30, then 24 hours) — never a silent permanent ban, and never by reading message content.
- Optional filters. You can self-report a gender and filter who you're matched with, and optionally match with people nearby instead of anywhere in the world.

Is it really anonymous?
Yes — no account, no email, no phone number is ever requested. Your alias is either randomly generated or one you type yourself; nothing ties it to a real identity. Full details on what little data we do process (an IP hashed briefly for abuse prevention and an approximate country) are in the Privacy Policy.
18+ only
MURMURLINE is restricted to adults. You confirm you're 18 or older before entering, and you'll be talking to an unmoderated stream of live human text — read our safety tips before you start.
